27/07/11 – Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a new gambling law which introduces criminal sanctions for illegal gambling. Amongst other things, the bill sets higher fines for both individuals and companies and allows courts to hand out prison sentences of up to 6 years for illegal gambling.
15/07/11 – The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. introduced a new technological initiative to identify and block known problem gamblers from gambling. Cameras installed at land casino entrances digitally scan and photograph the faces of all visitors identifying problem gamblers who have voluntarily signed up for the self-exclusion list. The system has been in use since May 2011 and keeps records of approximately 15,000 “registered” problem gamblers out of the estimated 300,000 living in the area.
