18/07/11 – The Greek Parliament seems determined to pass the draft law ‘Regulation of the gaming market – games of chance played on gaming machines or online', in an attempt to sell its state lottery and get hold of valuable tax revenue, despite a warning from the European Commission that the bill infringes competition laws. The new gambling law, which has now been included as part of an omnibus finance bill that includes pensions and tax evasion reforms, could be voted by the Parliament on 5 August, while the standstill period in the Commission will still run until 8 August 2011. 

 

 

21/07/11 – Aurelio Martínez, the President of Spain’s official State Lottery, Loterías y Apuestas del Estado (LAE), announced that the LAE will present today the draft proposal for the sale of 30% of its capital through an IPO in October 2011. The draft will be presented to the Comisión Nacional del Mercado de Valores (CNMV), the country’s government agency responsible for regulating the financial securities markets.


 

18/07/11 – The UK’s Economics and Finance Ministry announced that it will review the case for amending the taxation regime for remote gambling in line with the proposal recently made by Minister for Tourism and Heritage, John Penrose, to amend the Gambling Act so that remote gambling is regulated on a point of consumption basis. As announced last week, Minister Penrose is proposing that all operators, whether from the UK or abroad, will be required to hold a Gambling Commission licence to enable them to transact with British consumers.
