16/05/11 - Macedonia is set to open its online gambling market for the first time, while simultaneously overhauling the regulation of the land-based sector. The new legislation, which was passed in March 2011, will require online gambling companies to apply for a Macedonian licence and will impose a 10% tax on revenue. Gaming and amusement operators, on the other hand, will face a 20% tax on revenue rather than the current system of monthly payments. The legislation is due to be enacted on 5 September 2011.
16/05/11 – The President of the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), John Coates, has unveiled plans to expel any athlete, coach or official involved in illegal betting during the forthcoming Olympic Games to be celebrated in London in 2012. Furthermore, Coates reiterated his call for the establishment of a national sports betting authority with powers to investigate cheating and fraud, share information with national and international enforcement agencies, set penalties across all sports and “name and shame” anyone involved on a public register.
