The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), one of the consultative bodies of the European Union, organised a public hearing entitled “Online Gambling- After the Green Paper which way forward”. The aim of this hearing was to discuss the preliminary draft EESC opinion on the Commission’s Green Paper, as well as to hear the view of stakeholders and interested parties. Steffano Mallia, in charge of formulating the EESC's response to the European Commission’s Green Paper on online gambling in the internal market, supports the creation of a European framework with the aim of offering consumers “a minimum –not low- level of protection” and avoiding a duplication of conditions when operators apply for licences in different Member States. The EESC is expected to adopt its formal response to the Green Paper in October 2011. The Commission will take it into account, together with the European Parliament’s own-initiative report, when summarising the outcome of the consultation. The Commission intends to issue a Communication in 2012.
